Carli Kulmar started out as an evil commercial lawyer (her words, not ours) gaining experience in both private and government practise. She worked as a litigator full time while studying her Master’s at UNSW and teaching for the Law Society of NSW part time. After switching to academia in 2012, she completed a further degree in Terrorism and Security Studies to strengthen the foundation for her research, which focuses on National Security and Defence. Carli joined UC in 2020.
Enjoy this light hearted Q&A with Carli.
Where do we find you this weekend?
We are still in lockdown while I’m writing this, so I’ll spend Friday night playing online pub trivia with my friends in Sydney and Melbourne (and approx. 100 other participants). I will also work on my house renovations, cook, and play with my two dogs.
What’s the ideal start to a Sunday? Gentle start or a jolt?
If it’s a sunny day it will start with a jolt. My dogs will be keen to go for a walk and often wake me by ‘singing the song of their people’.
What’s the best thing you’ve watched on TV recently?
Sweet Tooth on Netflix was something fresh and different. I listen to podcasts more than watching TV and recommend You’re Wrong About, No Such Thing As A Fish, Smartless, and The Guilty Feminist for a mix of interesting information and humour.
A glass of something you’d recommend?
I’m a brandy drinker. Very few people enjoy brandy so instead of trying to convert anyone I’ll recommend the Gundog Estate Wild Semillon.
What’s that you’re singing in the shower?
My favourite song for shower singing is Je dis que rien ne m’épouvante from Carmen.

Soundtrack of your choice?
Rock music from the 60s to the 80s provides a great soundtrack when working around the house.
Best vacation you’ve been to?
I’ve had some wonderful travel experiences, so it is a little difficult to narrow down. My favourite vacation was in Scotland, I felt very at home there. I’m a bit of a history nerd so was excited to explore old burial sites and ruins.
Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.
People might not know I am a classically trained singer, singing in six languages. Also, I used to perform standup comedy (mentored by Dane Simpson).
Ideal dinner venue?
Somewhere outdoors with an ocean breeze.
