Where do we find you this weekend?
Every weekend is dad time for me, so you’ll find me at swimming lessons, the ice-cream shop, the Lego shop, or gobbling cakes with my daughter at Space Kitchen.
What’s the ideal start to a Sunday? Gentle start or a jolt?
My daughter spends weekends with me, so harsh jolts are the norm.
What’s the best thing you’ve watched on TV recently?
I’m not really a TV person, but there was this really awesome episode of Bluey… and the latest season of Daniel Tiger is a tour de force.
A glass of something you’d recommend?
I’m yet to discover an occasion, palate, or a food that Riesling doesn’t match. Forget the French stuff; Clare Valley does stellar Riesling, and Canberra makes some rippers, too. If we’re out of Riesling, then give me a Shiraz… or a Pinot… or Champagne… I love wine and I try a new one each week.
What’s that you’re singing in the shower?
I don’t mind a bit of a sing and have been known to belt out the odd tune. In the shower I stick to the jazz standards and anything easy on the vocal cords.
Soundtrack of your choice?
I listen to all types of music but I love jazz – it soothes the soul and goes exceptionally well with wine (or whine, depending on the company).
Best vacation you’ve been to?
I haven’t been on a proper holiday for an awfully long time, but I would dearly love to sail a boat around islands somewhere in the sun. All quiet and solo. Heaven.
Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.
Before I migrated to Australia, as a teenager I thought I’d like to be a butcher. I never got to the final trade level, but it’s true to say that I have a PhD and a Meat Retailing Certificate, and I’m equally proud of both. Sausages anyone? I can make ‘em… true story.
The ideal dinner menu?
Aside from cheese, which is basically the best food ever created and a meal in its own right worthy of any occasion, I love Indian cuisine and try Indian restaurants wherever I am in the world (the worst I’ve found was in Washington DC and the best in Melbourne, in case you’re wondering). I also dream of gorging on cake. Enormous chunks of luscious cake. Cake is an example of everything that is right with the world. Cake is a winner.
Ideal dinner venue?
My favourite is a little hole-in-the-wall French bistro on Clarence Street in Sydney. Best steak frittes outside of France. I’ve been known to go there for lunch… then stick around for dinner.
