DR TOM CHEN


Tom Chen is an Associate Professor in marketing in the Canberra Business School (CBS) and an Honorary Associate Professor in the Centre for Mental Health Research, the Research School of Population Health, ANU. He obtained his PhD from the Queensland University of Technology in 2011. He started his academic career in 2012 at the Newcastle Business School before joining CBS in June 2020. He is named "Australia's research field leader in Marketing 2020" by the Australian . His recent paper is ranked 6th on Shugan’s Top 20 Marketing Meta-Journal (Most Cited Marketing Articles) list. Tom's research includes co-creation and engagement, focusing on sharing. His teaching and service roles include the Research Coordinator for the Canberra Business School and the Internship Unit Convener (Semester 1 and 2) for the Canberra Business School and the Canberra School of Politics, Economics & Society. He currently supervises six CBS Higher Degree Research (HDR) students and two external HDR students from the University of Newcastle. He is an active member of the service research community. He is on three editorial review boards of Q1 service research journals and a board member and the global liaison officer of SERVSIG, an international service research community. He is also co-founder of the Co-creation in Service and Customer Engagement (CCIS-CE) Symposium and the Sharing Smart Cities Consortium.

Growing vegies and tidying up the garden at home.


What’s the ideal start to a Sunday? Gentle start or a jolt?

Coffee, coffee, coffee!


What’s the best thing you’ve watched on TV recently?

The Chair on Netflix.


A glass of something you’d recommend?

Iced Tea… Long Island style.


What’s that you’re singing in the shower?

Operatic Arias, pop songs, musical hits.


Soundtrack of your choice?

Piano Concerto No. 2: II. Adagio sostenuto (from the Movie soundtrack Shine). If you listen carefully, you will find a similar piece of the melody from the song All by Myself.


Best vacation you’ve been on?

Contiki Tour of Europe.


Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.

I have been a chorus singer since I was little. From Bass, Baritone to Tenor. I can sing the high C note in Nessun Dorma like Luciano Pavarotti.


The ideal dinner menu?

Surf and turf.


Favourite dish that I cook?

BBQ steak and pork belly roast.
