Inaugural UC Research Festival

The inaugural UC Research Festival was held from 6-10 June across the campus. There was a real buzz about the place as researchers from across the university came together to discuss their research and to explore opportunities for collaboration. The first day of the Festival provided an opportunity to hear from incoming DVCRE Prof Lucy Johnston, meet colleagues from across the campus, and learn about the cross-Faculty research already taking place through a series of showcases. BGL researchers featured in three of the showcase presentations, illustrating just how relevant our work is.

Day Two onwards moved to Faculty-based events and BGL had a series of engaging sessions in 11B44 ranging from Prof Kim Rubenstein’s reflections on her recent Senate campaign, to a thought-provoking discussion of ethical Australian indigenous research lead by guest speaker Assoc Prof Annette Gainsford. The combined 3MT heats between BGL, FAD, and the Faculty of Education were a particular highlight with a strong turnout and a large and very enthusiastic audience supporting the presenters. It was disappointing that the “Meet the Adjuncts” event had to be cancelled due to very low acceptances from both adjuncts and BGL staff. We will try again with a similar event later in the year.

The plan is that the Research Festival will become an annual event (although next year we will give ourselves a longer lead time to maximise publicity). Any thoughts about the Festival that will make it stronger next time round would be most welcome; please send any ideas through to Linda Botterill.
