Update on the new National Security Hub

The National Security researchers at UC/BGL convened as a group in mid 2020 under the umbrella of the newly National Security Hub. The Hub was established in mid 2021 and is co-convened by Professor Sascha Dov Bachmann and Associate Professor Michael Jensen. The new National Security Hub has already gathered an international footprint evidenced in the established research connections to South Africa, the UK, the US, Sweden and Australia.

The team of the National Security Hub submitted within less than a year several high end research funding applications and secured one from DST (100,00 AUD) in addition to another one (220,000 AUD) by individual members. The Team (individually or jointly) published 9 articles on mostly defence related topics. The members are regular contributors to national and international media outlets.

The Team is awaiting outcomes for two further, and very diverse, grant applications around national and regional security: one being an Army Research Scheme grant led by Carli Kulmar and the other an US-based MINERVA grant led by Mike Jensen which passed the EOI stage. Sascha Dov just completed a grant from defence, SPGP DST, on disinformation in conjunction with Edith Cowan University where three milestones had to be met within a year’s time despite COVID-19 restrictions. The team is about to start working on the currently active DST ORNET grant on disinformation which is being led by Sascha Dov Bachmann.

All this has been achieved despite the disruptions due to COVID-19 which made any research more challenging due to the restrictions and limitations imposed. This was only possible by the team working together non stop in addition to their full teaching commitments.
